Water by the Spoonful

Liza Colon-Zayas, Zabryna Guevara, Armando Riesco and Matthew Boston (sitting) in "Water by the Spoonful" A Hartford Stage presentation of a play in two act by Quiara Alegria Hudes. Directed by Davis McCallum.Elliot - Armando Riesco Odessa - Liza Colon-Zayas Yazmin - Zabryna Guevara Chutes & Ladders - Ray Anthony Thomas Fountainhead - Matthew Boston Professor Aman/ Ghost - Demosthenes Chrysan Orangutan - Teresa Avia Lim"Can I please have my passport back?" asks a figure that haunts Elliot, a soldier who served in Iraq who is finding daily civilian and family life hard to take in his old Philadelphia home turf. But all the characters in Quiara Alegria Hudes' compassionate follow-up to "Elliot: A Soldier's Fugue" (a Pulitzer finalist) are seeking a kind of visa -- one that will allow them to make it to a safe haven in a messed-up world. The world preem is receiving a first-class production, beautifully acted and gracefully helmed by "Elliot" director Davis McCallum at Hartford Stage. The funny, wise and touching play -- and the middle, stand-alone piece of her "Elliot" trilogy -- is sure to be welcomed at other theaters, too. (The third work, "The Happiest Song Plays Last," attached to the Goodman Theater in Chicago, was developed last summer at the National Playwrights Conference.) "Spoonful" takes place in the protag's old 'hood, where Elliot (Armando Riesco, stepping into that character's shoes again) works in a sandwich shop, dulled by his mundane routine but toying with the idea of becoming an actor. (An invitation to Hollywood lays the groundwork for the third play.) But family matters -- a death, money problems, issues with his birth mom -- scuttle any grand plans and feed into his own issues of guilt, anger and dependency. Running parallel to Elliot's story are four far-flung characters at various stages of recovery, communicating in a Narcotics Anonymous chat room. A smartass Japanese-American (Teresa Avia Lim), an African-American office worker (Ray Anthony Thomas) and a Main Line man who can't get past Day One (Matthew Boston) joke, bicker and seek solace in cyberspace where no one -- yet everyone -- can hear you scream. The chat room is presided over by a wise, haiku-reciting site manager (Liza Colon-Zayas) who is connected to Elliot's story. Everyone in the play is living day to day -- or spoonful by spoonful, to echo Hudes' poignant metaphor -- enabled, hindered, and supported by an ever-interrelated reach of family and friends. The play is a combination poem, prayer and app on how to cope in an age of uncertainty, speed and chaos. Hudes ("In the Heights") brilliantly taps into both the family ties that bind as well as the alternative cyber universe, exploring the latter's use of language, attitude and freedoms of expression. Confessional monologues here make more sense here than they do in O'Neill plays. Hudes' dialogue is bright, her characters compelling and her themes spelled out, once again, musically, with Elliot's professor cousin Yazmin (Zabryna Guevara) talking about the beauty of dissonance in the jazz of Coltrane. But it's only when cyber meets the real world that anger gives way to forgiveness and resistance becomes redemption; the heart of the play opens up and the waters flow freely.Sets, Neil Patel; costumes, Chloe Chapin; lighting, Russell H. The Dark Dark evening may rise before CruiseUPDATE: AMCTheaters have since removed their earlier statement and released the following online: "The information in this publish remains retracted until further notice. Please reference Warner Bros. for nearly any particulars concerning the Dark Dark evening Increases."A brief but significant The Dark Dark evening Increases titbit made an appearance among current day Jason Bourne news. Confirmation originates through, as strong whispers suggested the other day, that six minutes cost of DKR prologue may have before showings of Jason Bourne - Ghost Protocol at selected IMAX screens this Christmas. We're saying 'selected' because according to US cinema chain AMC Theaters, only full 70mm screens, rather than digital movie theaters, might be entitled showing the footage. There's not sure on whether Uk IMAX screens can also be showing the prologue. It's a bit of the surprise to look for the ever-secretive Christopher Nolan relaxing his Softball softball bat-cards available - six minutes of footage is, ultimately, a great chunk of scene-setting - but we aren't worrying. It is not a completely new way of Warner Bros. either. The studio displayed the opening minutes in the Dark Dark evening before tests of I am Legend four years ago. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol lands inside the Uk on December 26, so you'll be capable of lay how well you see round the first minutes in the Dark Dark evening Increases then. The whole film storms into cinemas about this summer time 20, 2012.

Shawn Stockmans Sing-Off Blog: Every Day To Celebrate

First Launched: October 25, 2011 3:14 PM EDT Credit: Getty Premium La, Calif. -- Caption Shawn Stockman undertaking within the 2011 Essence Music Festival within the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans about this summer time 1, 2011. Today can be a large day personally! Not only did we go through another incredible display of talent round the Sing-Off, currently, audio from my group Boyz II Males is released out of your new album entitled Twenty. This marks a milestone inside our career creating this 2 decades to become a business. Most close ties have no clue last that extended! This is often a proud moment! Outdoors in the music weve made with time, Im most grateful that this journey has trained me up to now! I used to be a frail, shy little guy initially initially when i first showed up in this area, an introvert to some degree. Really the only pals I'd were my group people, which, having a couple of exceptions, continues to be truth. But what this experience is doing was pressure me into situations where I desired to shed my skin, be assertive, change from like a boy with a guy. Part of that growth I owe to my father Thurman Sanders, who, not through his triumphs, but through his mistakes, and the way he labored together and also the candor with me at night regarding the subject, I observed who's in my opinion the most effective males Ive seen! I tell that certain story a good deal because it, in my opinion, is amongst the profound moments throughout my youthful existence! I used to be relaxing in your own house one Friday evening watching tv round the couch. My father on Fridays never returns home till late as they takes his normal trip to the area lounge whether they have a few drinks and relaxes! Today, he returns home just a little inebriated. Now, Im accustomed to my dad getting impromptu convos with me at night about virtually everything school, his job, sex, the whole nine. Sometimes, they might be pretty embarrassing, but tonight was different. My dad comes walking in progressively, even when he was drunk he was not ever sloppy, which he plops lower round the couch alongside me. He notifies me to produce him another drink, his favorite, Windsor whiskey with three ice along with a little water. I return in the kitchen area along with his drink to ensure that because he sips it, he generates for me a grin of approval. Perfect. We view television just a little after which it he turns in my opinion and states: Boy, on the way through existence youre prone to ruin! (He really used a factor that starts getting a f and finishes getting a k). Youre prone to do items that may hurt someone psychologically! You'll make a few mistakes! I didn't learn how to take what he was saying. I used to be flabbergasted, and somewhat disturbed! Until he leaned closer to me and mentioned, Wonderful that you just can do, and you also Can do it, it isn't the conclusion around the world! Awaken if you fall, dust shoulders off, and look for again! He finished his drink, provided the empty glass with half melted ice, and went upstairs to bed mattress. I a slave to while using TV playing without anyone's understanding of my ideas from the products he mentioned. Which he changed me. Changed my thinking. I used to be always the type that tries to please everyone. To this day still to some degree. However found equanimity to know that in the end falls lower, I start the process of recovery by not getting a anxiety attack, but creating the mindset that only maturity, understanding, and understanding brings! I believed the idea of existence ended up being to undergo it unbruised, to accomplish everything right making everybody happy! Up to now, Ive learned the choice! A baby shower celebration is ideal for the dirty. Which I actually do enjoy the sunlight more soon after a thunderstorm! Existence is discomfort AND pleasure, sadness AND happiness! U cant have one without any other. Its what shows us to know what's around us. And Im so glad to convey Ive loved my existence to date of dealing with some Everything! UPDATE: Netflix Stock Taking Beating As 3Q Subscriber Numbers & Guidance Weak

UPDATE, 5:30 PM: It looks like the deal Netflix announced this morning to expand into the UK and Ireland will take its toll on the company, which said during its post-earnings conference call with analysts that it will lose money for a few quarters owing to those costs. As a result, Netflix will suspend international efforts until the company returns to profitability. Weak subscriber numbers also were to blame for the ugly day: the company ended the third quarter with 23.8 million subs — about 200,000 fewer than it anticipated. “We became a symbol of the evil, greedy corporation,” Hastings told the AP. “Then we faced a reputational hit that created significantly more cancellations than we anticipated.” The churn rate almost doubled compared with a year ago and is expected to remain high thanks to fallout from Netflix’s 60% fee hike. “We’ve seen a second wave of cancellations from the price increase,” Hastings said on Monday’s analysts call. It’s that kind of uncertain outlook that pummeled shares after hours: The stock fell $32.01, or about 27%, to $86.83 in extended trading Monday afternoon. If that decline holds up, it will mark the first time Netflix’s stock price has fallen below $100 in nearly 14 months, the Associated Press says. It’s an amazing fall for the subscription movie giant, whose shares had already lopped 61% off their all-time high in mid-July. Its market cap has gone from $16 billion-plus to about $4.5 billion in three months’ time. All this as Netflix today reported that revenue rose 49% to $822 million and income climbed from $38 million a year ago to $62.5 million in the quarter that ended September 30. PREVIOUS, 1:19 PM: Netflix shares are currently down more than 18% in after-hours trading after the company reported 3Q earnings that beat Wall Street estimates in revenue and earnings per share. But the problem for investors is that the number of fleeing subscribers was even higher during the quarter than even Netflix anticipated when it revised down its guidance for the period owning to its recent missteps that included a price hike the splicing and re-splicing of its streaming and mail services. Stay tuned for the full numbers, but it’s wild to see Netflix stock drop below $100 as we speak. For the quarter, the company reported revenue of $822 million, beating estimates of $812 million, and earnings per share of $1.16, which is better than the predicted 94 cents. But shares are falling because of subscriber losses (800,000-plus in the quarter) and lower 4Q guidance for revenue, income and subs.

NBC Renews Summer time Reality Series Existence Within The Wild For Second Season

NBC has restored Love Within The Wild for any second season, the very first new broadcast series that released earlier this summer time to obtain a second spin. The move is sort of surprising considering the fact that the experience-dating series, a mix between Survivor and Bachelor Pad, averaged a lackluster 1.8/5 in grown ups 18-49 and 5.5 million audiences. However the rankings bar within the summer time is fairly low. And That I’ve mind that NBC brass loved the premise from the Endemol USA-created show and felt that could fare better having a more powerful cast. The success from the associations created around the first season of the series is proof of the initial format of the show, NBC’s leader of alternative Paul Telegdy stated. We anticipate a much more compelling season because the series will return with new format twists along with a new group of participants who'll conquer the wild — or otherwise — to locate love. Love within the Wild, that will mind to a different tropical place for Season 2, features single males and ladies who be a part of challenges and quests whilst searching for a mate.

Lindsay Lohan Briefly Jailed, Ordered to Work at Morgue

Lindsay Lohan Lindsay Lohan was taken out of court in handcuffs Wednesday after appearing for a scheduled "progress review," which stemmed from previous probation violations and that time she stole a necklace. Judge Stephanie Sautner revoked Lohan's probation, set bail at $100,000 and scheduled a hearing for Nov. 2.She subsequently posted bail and was to be released once the processing was complete.Lindsay Lohan photo galleryIn July, Judge Sautner had ordered the 25-year-old actress to perform community service at the Downtown Women's Center, but to court documents showed she "failed to show for nine scheduled appointments, and when she did appear, she blew them off after an hour or an hour and a half."Lohan had previously told her probation officer that at the women's shelter she "wasn't interacting with anyone so the service was not fulfilling." Is something wrong with Lindsay Lohan's teeth? After reading the statement, Saunter fired back with, "Is that what the service is about? It's supposed to fulfill the individual? Perhaps community service is work."Shawn Chapman Holley, Lohan's lawyer, asked that the court consider a statement from her therapist. "Ms. Lohan attended every regularly scheduled therapy session, and anything she missed was with the approval of her therapist." Holley went on to say that the therapist claims Lohan has reached a turning point in her maturity.Check out the rest of today's newsSautner replied, "So her failure to show up nine times at the downtown women's shelter ... that's reaching a turning point in your maturity?"Sautner concluded that she violated her probation, demanding that Lohan work 16 hours a week at the morgue until her next hearing.

Psych's James Roday on Shawn and Juliet, Gus' Growing Pains and Breaking All the Rules

James Roday You don't have to remind Psych star James Roday that his USA series has a rabid fan base - especially after those fans were forced to wait an extra three months for the show to return. "The Psych-O's are impatient, that's why we love them," Roday tells TVGuide.com. "They're foaming at the mouth. Sometimes it's for Psych episodes, sometimes it's for turkey." But with great fans, comes great responsibility. So the show had to be very careful when, after five years of will-they-or-won't-they tension, Psych kicked off its sixth season with Shawn (Roday) and Juliet (Maggie Lawson) as a full-fledged couple. It's been a long time coming, but Roday is all too familiar with the TV graveyard filled with shows that died after their lead characters coupled up. "You're always worried you're going to jump the shark with stuff like this because there are so many other shows that failed in the attempt to put two characters together," Roday says. "It's been an interesting process to make sure we service this new relationship and let people feel like, 'Alright, they are in a relationship and they are evolving,' but also making sure that Shawn and Gus are still the center of the Psych universe. Exclusive: Mekhi Phifer, Cheech Marin heading to Psych "To our credit and to the credit of our writing staff, I think we did a pretty nice job of not mixing things up too much," Roday continues. "The truth is the basis of Shawn and Juliet's relationship is their work. That's how they met, that's what they do the most. So in that sense, they've always been kind of a team and not a lot changes there. ... I think the fans will be pleased that we're serving the relationship, but not at the expense of any of the other stuff that they've come to love and expect." However, putting Shawn and Juliet together will still come at a cost to Gus (Dulé Hill). Now that he has to share his long-time partner-in-crime with Juliet, Gus will have more time to dwell on his own personal relationships. Or, more accurately, the lack thereof. "It affects him in a pretty dramatic way. He just panics, and his mojo and his drive for companionship goes into overload," Roday says. "He's not even sure of what he wants; he just knows he wants something. It's basically him saying, 'Wait a minute, I don't want to be the guy that's left without a chair when the music stops.'" Check out Hill had to say about his on-screen partner's new relationship: Gus' sudden bout with loneliness comes just as he and Shawn will begin to become more aware of their own mortality. "Like all men, there comes a point where you have to acknowledge that, 'OK, we're not that young anymore. We still feel young, but it's getting harder to chase people and you go down after one punch instead of two or three,'" Roday says. "Most of it is great for comic effect: there's a lot of pulled hammies, black eyes. ... It's just the two of them coming to grips with the fact that it's only going to get harder... but it's still worth it to them." Shawn and Gus may be feeling growing pains on-screen, but the series is showing no such signs of aging. The Season 6 premiere was up eight percent from last fall's premiere (2.99 million viewers) and the mystery-comedy is now USA's longest-running show on the air. "We had a great, great way in because of Tony Shalhoub and what he did with Monk, but we were able to kind of do the same thing and reach a younger audience. We kind of carved out our own little niche," Roday says. "We were able to come on and find our own success. Monk only lasted a little while longer and there we were as the lone quirky comedy on USA." Five years later, Psych is just one in an army of light, character-driven procedurals at USA (see: Burn Notice, Royal Pains). Even so, Shawn and Gus have managed to stand apart from the Michael Westens and Dr. Hanks thanks to its unique, irreverent humor and pop culture-savy scripts. (This season's homage episodes include Raiders of the Lost Ark, Clue and The Bachelorette.) "We've managed to create a universe where there is hardly anything that we can't get away with and still call it Psych," Roday says. "There are almost no rules as long as we solve a murder every week. I think we take full advantage of that. ... At some point, we just started evolving into this show that just does whatever it wants, and I think that's when we really put our stamp on what we're doing creatively." Psych airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on USA.

Tu seras mon fils

A Universal Pictures Intl. France release of a Epithete Films presentation and production, in association with Orange Cinema Series, Manon. (International sales: Other Angle Pictures, Paris.) Produced by Frederic Brillion. Directed by Gilles Legrand. Screenplay, Legrand, Delphine de Vigan. With: Niels Arestrup, Lorant Deutsch, Patrick Chesnais, Anne Marivan, Nicolas Bridet, Valerie Mairesse, Jean-Marc Roulot, Urbain Cancellier.Fermenting daddy issues prove a headier concoction than any vintage produced at a French chateau in "Tu seras mon fils," a classy, full-bodied family drama from Gallic scribe-helmer Gilles Legrand ("Malabar Princess"). Grouchy character thesp Niels Arestrup ("A Prophet," the upcoming "War Horse") is ideally cast as the coldhearted, overly pragmatic owner of a Saint-Emilion winery who considers his milquetoast son an unsuitable successor -- though not for lack of trying. Locally, the pic became the first surprise hit of harvest season and is glossy and mainstream enough to entice distribs offshore. It's also a shoo-in for a California-set remake. Classically structured and played, the film immediately sets up its main conflict between widower and father Paul de Marseul (Arestrup) and his grown-up son, Martin (Lorant Deutsch), who lives in a separate wing of the family's chateau with his wife (Anne Marivan). Bookish Martin excels at the administrative side of things, but his demanding old man has always kept him out of the winemaking process, a job that requires rigor, creativity and technical knowledge in equal doses. Since Paul took over the family biz from his own father at age 17, he's been responsible for creating the chateau's reds and whites -- the latter a rarity in Saint-Emilion -- with his right-hand man, Francois (Patrick Chesnais). Typical of Paul's controlling m.o., he actually finds out that Francois is terminally ill before even Francois does, forcing the winemaker to consider who will help him with the upcoming vintage. Though he goes through the motions of offering the willing Martin a chance -- something Paul does at least as much for the chance to mock him for his every mistake as to teach him something -- the winemaker has also secretly contacted Francois' golden-boy son, Philippe (Nicolas Bridet), who immediately quits his position at Coppola wines in California to return home when he hears about his father's condition. There are no big surprises in store in terms of where this setup is headed, especially when considering, as per press materials, that the Paul-Philippe storyline was partly inspired by Hal Holbrook's paternal affection for Emile Hirsch in "Into the Wild." But the pic's pleasures are nonetheless numerous, starting with its talented cast. Deutsch, his Everyman face hiding an underlying tenacity, is pitch-perfect as the son who has the willingness but not necessarily the capacity to impress his dad; the thesp's antagonistic chemistry with Arestrup rings true. Opposite Deutsch, newcomer Bridet makes a strong impression as Martin's childhood pal-cum-sudden rival, a gifted prodigal son who, paradoxically, has to lose his own father to realize his potential. Chesnais and Arestrup, who have the market on grumpy French codgers pretty much cornered, also deliver strong turns, with Arestrup precisely embodying another almost-heartless man. His Paul really has affection only for his work; his tragedy is the fact that he can't make wine without the help of others. Legrand and co-scripter Delphine de Vigan cleverly add a soupcon of backstory involving Paul's own late father. This, together with Paul's rocky relationship with his offspring and Francois and Philippe's equally complicated bond, makes "Tu seras mon fils" a film about complex father-son relationships in general and the unfair expectations and burdens they create on both sides. Tech package is silky smooth, from the glossy widescreen lensing (including a spectacular helicopter shot of a car crash amid the vines) to the classical score.
